THE YAP DOG IS BITING IN 2O23

Mark John Yap opened his new year account in stunning fashion, scoring a stoppage win over what appeared to be a very good version of Philippines Lightweight Leonardo Doronio.

Unable to secure a suitable 130 opponent for his first hitout of the year, Yap opted to jump a weight class and get a physical exam with the vastly experienced and durable Doronio.

It was very noticeable at the weigh-in, that aside from being the much larger boxer, Leonardo Doronio was in the best physical shape that he has been in for a very long time.

And he performed very well, while it lasted, and we look forward to seeing Doronio back again this year to see what he can produce.

But for Mark John Yap, it really was a patient yet lethal execution of a necessary task, and certainly showed shades of the brutality that he inflicted on Japan's best fighters prior to the pandemic.

Watch the full fight here, and you will see this dog has got a bite worse than his bark.

THE WARRIORS

Leonardo Doronio and Mark John Yap were the two most experienced boxers to grace the ring at REVOLUTION yesterday.

Both boxers looked in great shape, and it was very definitely the best version of Doronio we have seen in recent fights.

He pumped out skillful jabs that forced Yap to change position in the early rounds, and looked very comfortable in defense. Doronio also looked more dynamic than he has in a long while, and always looked dangerous. Based on yesterday's performance, Leonardo Doronio has a lot more wins in store.

Mark John Yap, superlatives often fall short, but his skills and killer were again to the fore.

Watch carefully how he set up that hook.

Bravo to Yap - bring on 2023 !

THIS WILL GO OFF - YOU CAN BET ON IT !

Novice boxers and with plenty of upside suitably describe Marklin Itim and Clarence Breboneria, who are perfectly matched at tomorrow's REVOLUTION event.

Both fighters have two wins in the professional ranks, and both have aspirations to have big careers in the sport of boxing.

Marklin Itim clearly has the edge in experience, having competed really well in matches with top opponents like Lorenz Ladrada and Remon Basas.

Clarence Breboneria looked a little conservative in his first three fights, but definitely looked more relaxed in his impressive December stoppage win over Mike Siena. He is also well mentored by the team at Elorde.

This is a 6 round Super Bantamweight clash, and despite the likelihood of being a non stop action affair, expect this one to go to the judges.

This will be one of the most competitive fights of the day.

Enjoy every moment of it !

YOU CAN'T PUT A PRICE TAG ON KNOWLEDGE

With near 100 professional fights between them, Leonardo Doronio and Mark John Yap qualify as the two most experienced performers at tomorrow's REVOLUTION event in Parañaque.

"Toto" Doronio has chalked up 18 wins, and was formerly a main sparring partner to boxing legend Manny Pacquiao. He was an impressive winner against Jimmy Borbon, before showing all his ring guile in dealing with a very offensive Arnel Baconaje.

Mark John Yap's deeds in Japan prior to the pandemic are legendary. It's accurate to say that he shredded some of that country's very best fighters in perhaps their strongest weight class.

His return to the Philippines with excellent showings against Charly Suarez and Junior Kauko Raka were ominous signs that foreshadow a big 2O23.

These boys are quality, and the 135 works in favour of Doronio. Don’t miss this tomorrow.

THIS WILL BE ALL OUT WAR !

We got Canada v Estrada #2 coming tomorrow  !

Their first clash was fight of the year, and it's on again, as Pablito Canada and JonJon Estrada made weight just moments ago.

These two killers go at it in a "no place for the faint hearted" featherweight war tomorrow in Parañaque City.

Both fighters approach tomorrow's clash brimming with confidence, having executed stoppage wins at their most recent appearances.

The Wolverine JonJon Estrada is especially adept in this department, and some would say an expert.

He has put opponents to the canvas in 14 of his 15 victories !!   Ouch !!

QUIBORS BOYS CHASING BLUE SKIES

Two of the most promising young boxers in the Philippines got a surprise visit from the King's Warrior Charly Suarez earlier today.

Jerald Into and Weljon Mindoro are both  improving boxers on a steep learning curve, but have been outstanding in their ring performances so far. They also show all the attributes of excellent fundamentals provided by the hard working coaches at Quibors Boxing Gym.

Into is a tall southpaw lightweight, who is unbeaten in 7 fights. His most recent performance was a really impressive showing, stopping the experienced Monico Laurente in the 4th round.

Middleweight Weljon Mindoro has been nothing short of outstanding in his short career, also unbeaten, and scoring 10 knockouts in his 10 wins thus far. The youngster also has experience sparring with Olympic medallist Eumir Marcial, and it is pretty clear that "Triggerman" is running out of opposition at home.

It is hoped that both these top prospects will get an opportunity to show their wares in Vietnam in 2O23.

Charly Suarez will begin training soon as he has an important assignment in Australia on March 17th. The King's Warrior takes on Australia's best Paul Fleming, who with a record of 28 and 0, is no easy task !

Then again, beating Charly Suarez is no simple feat either !!

MAGLINTE TO SHOW HE IS MORE THAN PRETTY

Anton Maglinte stars in one of the early bouts at Monday's REVOLUTION event in Parañaque.

The Manila based southpaw takes on debutant Raizen Jay Dela Fuente, a fighter with lots of amateur experience.

Maglinte comes into the contest with two fights under his belt, and despite those being defeats, it's notable that he did some good things against promising boxers Noriel De Chavez and Carlo Diaz.

Both of these bouts were highly competitive, and it will be interesting to see what improvements that "Pretty Boy" Maglinte can bring to his stoush with Dela Fuente.

JONG JONG FACES HIS WORST NIGHTMARE

This has all the makings of a spectacular main event.

Ronnie "Jong Jong" Baldonado has been training like a demon in Manila, and is promising a torrid welcome for visiting Mindanao boxer - Sanman's Ben Mananquil.

Mananquil, who is reverently known as "The Nightmare" has looked great in two outings since the pandemic, with a 4th round stoppage win over Crison Omayao, before losing to unbeaten South African star Phumelele Cafu, who was rated #11 in the world. The Nightmare did some good work early in that match, but it's fair to say that he was stylistically unsuited to his fellow southpaw opponent, and he is likely to have the ideal dance partner in Baldonado.

But this kid Baldonado is excitement plus, a skilled boxer that really knows how to turn up the heat on opponents.

Jong Jong has got great hands, lots of firepower, and you just know he has a real talent for putting butts on the canvas.

Just think back to his clash with hot prospect Carl Jammes Martin, who had lots of issues with this firebrand, and met the floor in the early stages of their battle.

Ronnie Baldonado is back to his proper weight class for this main event clash, and if his blazing fists get their way, the Nightmare maybe heading the way of his heralded rival Ben Mananquil.

PABLITO CANADA SAYS "ANYTIME, ANYWHERE !"

Manila's Pablito Canada had a career record that included a run of  losses, but all against the big dogs, and they were bouts where he was responsible for some great performances.

So when he faced JonJon Estrada, he knew he was facing a dangerous yet flawed fighter, and it was a match that he was super confident of winning.

Estrada v Canada was a slugfest, and in spite of Pablito reversing his fortunes and putting the Wolverine in trouble, he ultimately fell for the trap of going toe to toe with a knockout artist.

Canada was quick to make amends, travelling to the backyard of hot Mindanao prospect Michael Casama, and stopping the unbeaten boxer in the 8th round.

Pablito Canada now turns his eyes to the Wolverine, and feels he has unfinished business with the man with two fists of iron.

This will be a mega fight.

Both boxers are predicting an early night for their opponent.

WOLVERINE: "WE WON'T NEED THE JUDGES"

JonJon Estrada meets Pablito Canada for the second time at UKC REVOLUTION 2O23 next Monday.

Their first fight was one of the most exciting of the year, with Canada dropped multiple times, and Estrada significantly wobbled. To make things even more interesting, Pablito Canada has rebounded since with an outstanding knockout win over the previously unbeaten Michael Casama. Canada has chased Estrada to avenge their initial meeting, and is confident of reversing the result.

The Wolverine has achieved cult like status because of his stalking predatory style, and his remorseless bludgeoning of opponents. His record of 14 knockouts in 15 wins bellows a cautionary tale.

So JonJon, any words to your opponent before your upcoming match ?

"Yes. Wear a crash helmet !"

PREY BECOMES THE PREDATOR!

When we enlisted @anhnquan to fight against @markjohn_yap on an exhibition match during #FortunesOfWar event at #grandhotram, we wondered if this Vietnamese debutant can even survive the first 2 rounds against a veteran boxer such as Mark John Yap who has had 48 professional fights with 31 wins and 50% KO rate! WHO IS NEXT FOR CHAMP CHARLY SUAREZ ?

Philippines' greatest boxer Charly Suarez recently secured the IBF Asia belt, and by defeating Indonesia’s top rated Defry Palulu (WBC Asia champion) he was elevated to #8 in the world ranking by the International Boxing Federation.

Suarez has progressed through the professional ranks at breakneck speed, winning 14 in a row, and picking up WBA, IBF and RP National belts in the process. He is also now ranked at #4 in the latest OPBF rankings.

Suarez will look to defend his IBF title, and was originally mooted to meet Japan's top rated Super Featherweight Yoshimutsu Kimura.

Kimura was viewed as a solid offensive fighter with poor defense, and not a serious challenge for Suarez. This viewpoint proved accurate when Kimura was knocked out last week in a non title bout in Tokyo.

The focus has now moved to a fighter that VSP are a huge fan of - the unbeaten Australian champion Paul Fleming.

The proud indigenous prodigy dubbed "Showtime" has an amazing record of 28 and 0 with 18 knockouts,  and brings an electric brand of high octane energy to the ring that fans just love.

Fleming also holds IBF, WBA, WBC and IBO regional belts, and like the King's Warrior, is gunning for a world title shot.

Sounds perfect !

FIGHT OF THE YEAR AUSTRALIA 2O22

Jackson Jon England and Paul Fleming are two of Australia's elite 130lb fighters, and what shaped up as a great fight on paper, ended up bringing the roof down !

These two champions threw the kitchen sink at each other for 10 consecutive rounds, earning them "Fight of the Year" status in Australia.

The win propelled former Olympian Paul Fleming to 28 and 0, and bestowed  him with WBA, WBC and IBF regional titles.

Interestingly, there is another very talented 130lb fighter in the Philippines by the name of Charly Suarez, also a former Olympian, and a recent winner of the IBF Asia belt.

He sits on 14 and 0, and despite his relative inexperience as a professional, the King's Warrior casts a simple message across the oceans:

"MR. FLEMING, WE ARE READY. LET'S GET IT ON!"

JERUSALEM SMASHES JAPAN SENSELESS

CLAIMS WBO WORLD TITLE

Great news to wake up to !

Who says the little guys can’t punch!

Earlier today in Osaka, Japan, the first new world champion of 2023 was crowned, as Filipino challenger Melvin Jerusalem sensationally took out defending WBO minimumweight champ, or strawweight champion if you prefer, Masataka Taniguchi with one big right hand to the chin in the second round. Jerusalem nailed the southpaw champion with a straight right hand that landed flush, Taniguchi going down heavily and then attempting to get up far too quickly. His equilibrium gone, Taniguchi was saved from any more by the referee. Time was 1:04. New champ Jerusalem is now 20-2(11). Taniguchi, who was making the second defence of the title and was a big favourite to win today’s fight, falls to 16-4(11).

Taniguchi won the opening round, this with his right jab; the challenger looking somewhat nervous and unsettled, with Jerusalem guilty of slinging some wild shots. This made the stunning, one-punch ending all the more, well, stunning. There could be no arguments about the stoppage, and, with his big win, Jerusalem restored some pride to the Philippines; the country having ended 2022 with not one reigning world champion.

28 year old Jerusalem, who has never been stopped and who lost to Wanheng Menayothin in his only other world title chance, this in January of 2017, for the WBC strawweight title, has now won his last nine fights, 5 by stoppage. A big puncher for such a small guy, this 105 pounder is a fighter to watch. It will be interesting to see who “Gringo,” as Jerusalem is known, fights next.

MATEO TAPIA MEETS THE KING

Nov 3, 2018 #VSP organized the first #Victory8 event in Ho Chi Minh city.

At the time, there was very little information available of Vietnamese boxers (not even on YouTube). We were searching high and low for local boxers. Then DJ Duy suggested a retired boxer named Truong Dinh Hoang. We couldn't pronounce his name so started to call him TDH and gave him a ring name "The King" to make it easier to remember.  We were worried how a retired Amateur boxer would do against a hot young professional boxer from Australia.

Our worries quickly faded at the weigh in!

The moment when TDH walked up to @mateo.tapia, we knew this would be a great fight!

.

Mateo Tapia who was 20 years old at the time is now undefeated #1 in Australia with 15wins (9KO), soon moving to the US to pursue world titles.

TDH has since become a WBA Asia Champion on our 3rd Victory8 "Legends of Hoan Kiem".

The Philippines boxer got the best of the second round, and the fighters followed that with toe to toe action, only to be halted by the ring doctor shortly after.

This was a great display by former HCMC youth boxer Quân, who clearly relished the challenge of fighting an established star like Mark John Yap.

AND STILL NUMBER ONE ASS WHOOPER!

JonJon Estrada enjoys the flowers and trophy moments after experiencing  his first time victory in Vietnam. The Wolverine debuted in the only way he knows how - with a stoppage win, over local Muay Thai fighter Thai Hoang Huy. Estrada appeared very relaxed in the opening round, yet dropped his Vietnam opponent with a two punch combo. He then closed the show in the 4th round with Thai Hoang Huy unable to answer the Wolverine's beserk attack while  pinned to the ropes.

HANOI HITMAN DROPS A ROUND ONE BOMB !

Hanoi strong man Nguyễn Văn Hải made an impressive return to the professional arena, stunning unbeaten Indonesian Paisal Panjaitan with a stoppage victory.

The bout began quite evenly, with the visitor boxing carefully, and even dictating ring position, but then BOOM!

The Indonesian fighter began to launch heavy shots at Nguyễn Văn Hải, and found himself side on to his Vietnam nemesis. Quick to sieze the moment, Hải unleashed a perfect left hook to surprise the chin of Panjaitan.

It was a superb performance from Nguyễn Văn Hải against a confident and unbeaten opponent. His distance and timing were a big improvement on his loss in Manila, which was also against an unbeaten prospect named Jerald Into.

The Hanoi champion advances to 3 wins and 1 loss, and appears a potential professional star for Vietnam boxing.

CHARLY SUAREZ SHOWS ASIA HE'S THE BOSS

Last night in Vietnam, Philippine Army enlisted personnel Charly Suarez won the IBF Asia title with an impressive but unfortunate victory.

The King's Warrior boxed just two rounds with Indonesia’s champion Defry Palulu and undoubtedly looked all class and set the scene for a spectacular battle.

Unfortunately, in the second round, southpaw Palulu suffered some eye damage that required the ring doctor to stop the fight.

Charly Suarez is now confirmed ruler of Asia, owning both the WBA and IBF belts.

Before joining the Army's regular duty in July 2022, Private Suarez was a reserve Staff Sergeant, as may be remembered.

Private Suarez was named WBA Asia's Boxer of the Month for March 2022. Suarez competed in the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil and won gold medals in various boxing events at the Southeast Asian Games in 2009, 2011, 2019, and 2022.

His coach is army reservist 1st Lieutenant Delfin Boholst.

THREE BELTS ON THE LINE AT FORTUNES OF WAR BOXING EVENT IN VUNG TAU

*story courtesy Vietnam News

In his 12th pro match, IBF Asia lightweight champion Đinh Hồng Quân will face Arnel Baconaje of the Philippines over 12 rounds. It is his second time defending his belt. Last July, he defeated Jules Victoriano of the Philippines unanimously.

HÀ NỘI — A blockbuster "Fortunes of War" boxing event will bring together Asia's best fighters in 12 bouts, including three title matches, sanctioned by the IBF and WBO on December 10 at The Grand Hồ Tràm Strip, Bà Rịa Vũng Tàu Province.

In his 12th pro match, IBF Asia lightweight champion Đinh Hồng Quân will face Arnel Baconaje of the Philippines over 12 rounds. It is his second time defending his belt. Last July, he defeated Jules Victoriano of the Philippines unanimously.

The rising Vietnamese star does have a size advantage. Quân has recorded nine wins (4KOs), one draw and one loss (KO).

At 24, 'Black Eagle' Quân is younger than his rival and stands at No 189 in the world, 43 places higher than Baconaje.

However, 'The Silencer' Baconaje has bowled over some of the Philippines' biggest and best stars. Of his 15 wins, 11 came by knockout. The 29-year-old has suffered five losses, three by knockout.

Baconaje has thoroughly prepared by training with the famous fighter "Japanese monster" Naoya Inoue.

Quân completed a training camp in South Korea before having an intensive training camp with legendary Manny Pacquiao in the Philippines.

"I feel in way better shape, my camp has been good, and being able to train with a legend like Manny Pacquiao has helped me a lot," said Quân.

"He is a model of hard work to succeed in boxing, as well as an example of rising up in boxing. Professionally, I learn, practise and improve my abilities to prepare well for the upcoming matches. I won't let people down."

Quân said that Pacquiao advised him a lot. In particular, the most memorable is the practice motto "fight hard, complete the exercises and always have faith".

"Everybody will see a far better Đinh Hồng Quân this time, and I already know I will beat Arnel Baconaje. I am excited about it. I am very happy to have the challenge of stopping a top fighter like Baconaje in front of my home country," he said.

The second title match is between IBF Asia super-featherweight Charly Suarez of the Philippines and Indonesian Defry Palulu in a 12-round bout.

Their match was scheduled in March 2020 but was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Suarez is a three-time SEA Games champion who won the 2014 Asian Games silver. He turned pro in 2019 and impressed the community with 13 wins with seven KOs.

Suarez has stayed busy this year as he fought for the WBA Asia title in March and defended it twice in July and October. He also won the Philippines national title in the process.

Palulu is currently No 1 in his country. He places 162 in the world with a record of 25 wins, two draws and two losses. He took the IBO Asia Pacific and WBC Asian Boxing Council super-featherweight belts in 2019.

"The Unseen Hammer" is in career-best shape and has been working on angles and power shots to halt the meteoric rise of Suarez.

"That is our plan. Team Palulu have worked very hard for this, and we will not let this opportunity slip," he said on vsppromotions.com.

"Suarez does not have the power to hurt me, or even hold me off. But I know when I catch him, he will go down. Indonesia will have a new champion on December 10."

The third title match is between South Korean Song Chan Ho and Thai Anusong Thonglueang, who will defend his WBO Oriental Youth super-lightweight belt across 10 rounds.

Song, 19, unbeaten in eight fights, is certainly living up to his "Purge Boy" ring name.

He is fast and has a high work rate, nice footwork, and works some clever angles. He is durable and is developing some power to go with his accurate hands.

Tàu City.

Thonglueang, 18, has already created media attention in Thailand, where he has put together 12 wins (9KOs) with only one loss in extra quick time. He is a dynamic all-action fighter and knows how to be effective inside the ropes.

Other matches with Vietnamese fighters are between Nguyễn Văn Hải vs Paisal Panjaitan of Indonesia in the lightweight class in four rounds; Phạm Minh Quân vs Mark John Yap of the Philippines in the super-featherweight in four rounds; Lê Hoàng Hiệp vs Jetro Pabustan of the Philippines in the super-bantamweight in four rounds and Thái Hoàng Huy vs JonJon Estrada of the Philippines in the featherweight in four rounds.

Why does Vietnamese Boxing really need international events at home like Fortunes of War?

NEWS FROM WEBTHETHAO

Professional boxing events in Vietnam began to rekindle in the period of 2015, when management units such as Vietnam Boxing Federation (VBF) or Ho Chi Minh City Boxing Federation. Ho Chi Minh City (HBF) organizes this form of competition, with the participation of famous boxers in the domestic amateur boxing village. After that, promotion companies began to appear with names like VSP Promotions, Cocky Buffalo, Saigon Sports Club, VBC, Trigger Boxing... continued to appear to bring more national elements. economic: events, title matches, friendlies.

However, it was not until 2018, when the promoters really embarked on a comprehensive approach, at this time, the challenge for the development of professional boxing began to really appear.

To be recognized at the professional level, competitions must be under the supervision of organizations capable of recognizing professional achievements around the world. This supervision is based on the rules - the rules of the game (regulations) are specified in the operating regulations of professional organizations such as WBC, WBO, WBA, IBF...

In Vietnam, the presence of these organizations is not much. Therefore, boxers have only one option: to conduct tours in countries with developed boxing backgrounds such as Thailand, the Philippines, Japan, Korea, ... to be recognized for their achievements. However, the issue of funding, training procedures - competing with Vietnamese boxers is not a simple problem, despite the participation of experienced promotion companies in the region.

As a result, promoters have opted for a more pragmatic approach: organizing events right in Vietnam. To do this, they need to contact to get the approval of professional organizations in the world, through sending professional teams, supervising the organization and competition of martial arts.

Since 2019, units like VSP Promotions have made their mark with a series of events such as Victory 8, VSP Pro,... bringing Vietnamese boxers to participate in professional matches at home, recognizing their achievements. in the international system, gradually removing barriers for boxers who want to pursue this path.

From professional events, title fights began to appear. Victory 8: Legend of Hoan Kiem with the title of WBA East Asia; events of IBF, WBO at The Grand Ho Tram Strip with champions Dinh Hong Quan, Song Chan Ho... and here comes Fortunes of War with 3 matches for WBO - IBF title in weight classes on 10th December.

Not only for boxers, bringing international events to Vietnam also creates opportunities for domestic professionals, namely management units, referees, supervisors, etc. exposure to professional environment according to world standards. From there, events in Vietnam will gradually move to international level - something we all want in the development of all sports.

Following the success of two title events in April and July, Fortunes of War witnessed the title defense of the IBF Asian champion -  "Black Hawk" Dinh Hong Quan  in his 11th fight. The fighter born in 1998 will face the boxer from the Philippines -  "Silent Assassin" Arnel Baconaje.

In addition to the defense of the IBF Asian lightweight title between Dinh Hong Quan and Arnel Baconjae, Charly Suarez - a three-time SEA Games gold medalist and silver medalist at ASIAD 2014 will welcome an opponent from Indonesia - Defry Palulu for the IBF title. Asian super-featherweight.

Previously, WBO Oriental champion from Korea - Song Chan Ho will face Thai boxer Anusong Thonglueang in his title defense match. The competition took place over 10 rounds in the super-lightweight division.

In addition to the three matches/defending of the IBF and WBO belts,  Fortunes Of War  also witnessed the return of Vietnamese boxing monument Nguyen Van Hai, promising fighters Le Hoang Hiep, Thai Hoang Huy or Pham Minh Quan before the competition. boxers from Indonesia and the Philippines.

List of matches at Fortunes of War on December 10:
