VSP boxer Lorenz Ladrada has had a busy and successful campaign in 2021, after a two year hiatus from the sport. The native of Bukidnon , and a former prospect with ALA in Cebu, has trained with the strong Elorde team in Manila since January. Next week Ladrada returns to the ring against quality southpaw Jason Buenaobra, and is looking to an emphatic win to close the year in style.
Lorenz “Cerberus” Ladrada has boxing in his blood. He left school at 10 and was a member of the Cagayan de Oro boxing team. By the time he was 17, he had joined ALA promotions in Cebu and made his professional debut. His last win for that organisation was in 2019 against Rimon Rama, and it was not long after that that the pandemic hit and Ladrada returned home to Mindanao.
It was a far heavier than previous version of the fighter that got on the scales on the first day of the year and weighed 146 pounds! Many even thought that Cerberus was pregnant!! But Ladrada managed to take off 20 pounds by February, and scored an impressive comeback win against the very physical Remon Basas. “Cerberus” followed up on this first up effort with excellent wins against Marklin Itim and Claudevan Sese, showing pleasing improvement with each match. His most recent match was definitely his best performance of the year, albeit a narrow loss at the hands of Gary “the Hawk” Tamayo. Ladrada and Tamayo had generated a great rivalry even before they stepped in the ring, and the match between the two top prospects didn’t disappoint. Southpaw Tamayo got the best of the early rounds, and Ladrada did the better work late, culminating in an exciting split decision win to Tamayo.
Lorenz Ladrada promises anyone that will listen ythat he will deliver his best performance of 2021 next week at the Ultimate Knockout Challenge in Paranaque. He boasts that all his signature moves of fast footwork, elusive defense and exhilarating shot selection will of course be on show. But he says that there is more, and that he is far better prepared for a quality southpaw like Buenaobra this time. Ladrada warns that his angles, his distance, and his punch volume will be a big step up from what he showed against Tamayo.
For sure, he will need it! Jason Buenaobra is a measured southpaw with great ring IQ!
Never one to worry, Lorenz “Cerberus” Ladrada has declared that he will win, and he will win pretty!.

Charly Suarez had been inactive (as were all local pinoy fighters) and the pandemic was proving to be a terrible time for many boxers who could not return home, and even worse, having a daily battle to feed themselves and their families.
VSP asked Mam Cucuy if it was possible to create a show so that Charly Suarez could resume his career. Despite all odds, she put together a great card that also unearthed another big talent - the Wolverine JonJon Estrada!
The event was aptly named Reboot "New Beginning" ,and even though there were only 5 bouts, and the boxers had to endure a "quarantine bubble", it was a lot of fun and marked the start of boxing again in the Philippines.

The relentless punching machine that is Remon Basas returns this month, and matches up with rangy young southpaw Jestine Ace Tesoro.
The bout will signal a move to the heavier weight classes for Basas, but without doubt, Olivetti Gym will have him well prepared for the task. The 24 year old fighter is still very much on the improvement path, but has already racked up 6 wins, and has experienced good opponents like Delmar Pellio, Lorenz Ladrada and Franco Serafica.
The great thing that has characterized all his performances is that he always brings the heat! This kid is relentlessly working in the ring, and has a low looping style that sets up really effective body punches.
Jestine Ace Tesoro is a really promising type. He had good moments against JonJon Estrada, outgunned a very savvy Lorence Rosas, and then was narrowly beaten in Japan. But for Remon Basas, Tesoro is just another guy across the ring, and he will be bringing a bucket load of BAD BAD intentions to the party !

The Aussie indigenous star and Ladrada will battle out 8 rounds tomorrow night at the Gold Coast on the undercard of the Mairis Briedis world cruiserweight title defense. Briedis has suffered only one loss in a glittering career, that being at the hands of current heavyweight world champ Oleksandr Usyk.
Bukidnon's Lorenz Ladrada resumed from a 2 year hiatus in early 2021, only to enjoy the busiest of years, winning 4 of his 5 matches, and pleasingly, showing constant improvements with each outing.
His consistency has been rewarded with a fight in Australia against one of that country's best super featherweight prospects, the very "Deadly" Dana Coolwell. The Aussie is one of those beautiful indigenous fighters, really fast hands, lots of clever volume, and blessed with intuitive skills and movement! And similar to Ladrada, each time we see Coolwell he just gets better and better. His last match was a narrow points loss for a world youth title that many believe he won.
This is a really interesting fight!
Coolwell is 2 to 3 weight classes above Ladrada, who also happens to be the much shorter boxer.
But the Aussie bout will be on the "middle ground " of featherweight, and as you can see from today's picture, Ladrada will strip very strongly at this weight. Dana Coolwell is tall and still growing, so it remains to be seen if he can bring his usual energy and pop to this world title undercard.
This is one of best undercards in Australia this year, and Ladrada v Coolwell is the main support to the world cruiser title between Mairis Briedis and Jai Opetaia.

TIGER 2022 plays host to an array of top name fighters, but without doubt, one of the best match ups is Olivetti’s Remon Basas taking on Jason Buenaobra.
These two boxers could not be any more different in style, yet both are on an upward trajectory. Perhaps the only form line that unites them, is a common opponent in the form of the very talented Lorenz Ladrada.
Remon “Bad Bad” Basas showed promising signs in his first bout of 2021, losing a points battle to Ladrada. Whilst beaten on timing and speed, he showed lots of come forward, and even late into the final round, he still loomed dangerously. He followed up that effort with an excellent win over a vastly improved Marklin Itim, a super close affair that was underscored by a massive punch count for both fighters. But it was the accuracy and shot selection of Basas that swayed the judges, and it was definitely a great showing by the Olivetti boxer.
Jason Buenaobra resumed from a long lay off, and took on Ladrada last December. Showing no signs of rust, “Manefisto” showed beautiful ring control from the southpaw stance, and dominated his opponent for much of the fight. The points loss doesn’t tell the whole story though, as he fought a better version of “Cerberus” Ladrada than Basas did, and he also enjoyed lots of great moments. That fight was also at featherweight, and no doubt, the move to super bantam will really assist his cause.
This one plays out as a total war!
Yes, Jason Buenaobra is the more experienced and technical boxer. But Basas is strong, and he also owns a swarming style that gives rivals no peace, and he will be looking to make this a very dogged, physical contest.
Can he solve the Buenaobra southpaw puzzle? Let’s see, but “Bad Bad” Basas definitely has plans to make life extremely uncomfortable for his classy opponent!

Lorenz Ladrada closes out the year having just engaged in a closely contested battle with the irrepressible Jason Buenaobra. The year proved busy for Bukidnon's Ladrada, who chalked up 4 wins and an SD loss to the promising Gary Tamayo. Flair and footwork were his travelling companions, and in 2022, expect to see more improvements to his repertoire.
Buenaobra was a revelation! He really toiled throughout this match, constantly taking Ladrada out of his comfort zone. He did such a great job, this smart southpaw was able to keep Ladrada on the backfoot for much of their quality bout. The effort of Jason Buenaobra was top class, and excited to see what he can deliver in 2022, especially if he drops to a more suitable weight class.

Jason "Manefisto" Buenaobra brought the heat, and some nice technical tools to go with it, in a superb match up with Bukidnon's Lorenz Ladrada at UKC. Buenaobra pressed dangerously for all six rounds, and presented lots of problems for Ladrada from a constantly pivoting southpaw stance. It was an energetic display by Buenaobra, and one that fell just short on a hard to score bout. This was a great showing by Manefisto, who looks certain ask serious questions of rivals in future fights.

Earlier today in Osaka, Japan, the first new world champion of 2023 was crowned, as Filipino challenger Melvin Jerusalem sensationally took out defending WBO minimumweight champ, or strawweight champion if you prefer, Masataka Taniguchi with one big right hand to the chin in the second round. Jerusalem nailed the southpaw champion with a straight right hand that landed flush, Taniguchi going down heavily and then attempting to get up far too quickly. His equilibrium gone, Taniguchi was saved from any more by the referee. Time was 1:04. New champ Jerusalem is now 20-2(11). Taniguchi, who was making the second defence of the title and was a big favourite to win today’s fight,falls to 16-4(11).
Taniguchi won the opening round, this with his right jab; the challenger looking somewhat nervous and unsettled, with Jerusalem guilty of slinging some wild shots. This made the stunning, one-punch ending all the more, well, stunning. There could be no arguments about the stoppage, and, with his big win, Jerusalem restored some pride to the Philippines; the country having ended 2022 with not one reigning world champion.
28 year old Jerusalem, who has never been stopped and who lost to Wanheng Menayothin in his only other world title chance, this in January of 2017, for the WBC strawweight title, has now won his last nine fights, 5 by stoppage. A big puncher for such a small guy, this 105 pounder is a fighter to watch. It will be interesting to see who “Gringo,” as Jerusalem is known, fights next.
Nov 3, 2018 #VSP organized the first #Victory8 event in Ho Chi Minh city.
At the time, there was very little information available of Vietnamese boxers (not even on YouTube). We were searching high and low for local boxers. Then DJ Duy suggested a retired boxer named Truong Dinh Hoang. We couldn't pronounce his name so started to call him TDH and gave him a ring name "The King" to make it easier to remember. We were worried how a retired Amateur boxer would do against a hot young professional boxer from Australia.
Our worries quickly faded at the weigh in!
The moment when TDH walked up to @mateo.tapia, we knew this would be a great fight!

Mateo Tapia who was 20 years old at the time is now undefeated #1 in Australia with 15wins (9KO), soon moving to the US to pursue world titles.
TDH has since become a WBA Asia Champion on our 3rd Victory8 "Legends of Hoan Kiem".

The “Little Giant” Giovanni Escaner made his long awaited return in March of last year, matched up with the experienced veteran Albert Alcoy. The bout marked a ring absence of more than 2.5 years for the locally based star, but he never missed a beat, and won with a dominant round two stoppage. The win was his first since he defeated the outstanding Renoel Pael in a thriller back in 2019.
The win over Pael, a winner of 23 fights, highlighted the level that Escaner had to worked to in his professional career. It also put him back on the winners’ list, after a previous loss to top American Joshua Greer ended in a dramatic stoppage loss. That blip punctuated a 10 match winning streak for the “Little Giant”.
The fight between top US prospect Joshua Greer and Giovanni Escaner must surely have been one of the most dramatic in 2019. Greer appeared to be sailing towards a world title. With only one loss on his resume, to the unbeaten Stephen Fulton, Greer was expected to make a statement in the Escaner fight. But things didn’t go to plan for the high flying American. Escaner dropped Greer in the third round, and it really looked as if he was going to be finished off by the Little Giant. To his credit, Greer regained his senses, and in a to and fro round, managed to stop Escaner in round 8. The action was frenetic, and it seemed obvious that the Philippines fighter perhaps only got caught in his effort to drop the American for a second time. To illustrate the closeness of the bout, the judges had scores of 67-66 and 67-65 when the referee called a halt.
Giovanni Escaner has been sparring in Manila in preparation for his appearance at REVOLUTION on January30th, and if the rumours are correct, the Little Giant is back bigger, badder, and better than ever!!!”

The REVOLUTION is officially in full swing, with news that ace bantamweight Ronnie Baldonado will be joining the card on January 30th.
The Mindanao boxer known as JongJong is one of the most exciting strikers in the Philippines, yet has been in relatve obscurity since 2019 due to inactivity.
It's almost ironic that he finally returned in 2022 to two losses, but the merit in the performances provides insight that 2023 will showcase the best version of Baldonado yet seen !
Ronnie Baldonado returned after a 3 year break, jumped weight classes, and took on one of the Philippines most promising fighters Carl Jammes Martin. It's fair to say that JongJong dominated the early stages of that match, even putting Wonder Boy on his butt, before tiring late in the contest. It was a fantastic comeback performance by Baldonado, and was followed up by a points loss in Japan to hot prospect Sho Ishida, a winner of 31 bouts.
2023 provides a fresh start for Baldonado, who at only 26, and having experienced a 3 years break from the sport, is an improving young fighter that is extremely compelling to watch.
So expect to see Ronnie Baldonado turn up on January 30th with all guns blazing !

Jetro Pabustan is the latest to lend his consummate fight talents to the Revolution event in Manila this January 30.
The high level Mindanao southpaw is eyeing off international challenges this year, and is well qualified to do so. A winner of 31 bouts, the Silent Operator has the distinction of being a regional belt winner and also WBO world title contender. Pabustan had two foreign assignments last year, and performed admirably in both.
In August, he dropped a highly debated points decision in the States to the top level Tramaine Williams, in a match where he appeared to outwork and outland the American.
More recently, Pabustan competed in an exhibition bout in Vietnam against cult fugure Le Hoang Hiep, and in a really entertaining contest, he looked good in the unfamiliar four round format.
Jetro Pabustan was last seen in Manila winning against top prospect Brian Tamayo, and it will be great to see him kick off his 2O23 campaign on the classy Revolution card on January 30th.

A meteroic two years for the King's Warrior Charly Suarez, a Philippines amateur star and relative late comer to the professional ranks.
Since January 2021 Suarez has had 10 fights,10 wins, a Philippines national title, and also WBA and IBF Regional titles.

And you ain't seen nothing yet !
1. Each round shall consist of a three (3) minute duration, with a one (1) minute rest period between rounds.
2. The referee is the sole arbiter of a bout and is the only individual authorized to stop a contest. This rule shall not preclude a video or other review of a decision under the procedures of the applicable regulatory authority if a protest is filed claiming a clear rule violation.
3. All bouts will be evaluated and scored by three (3) judges.
4. The 10 Point Must System will be the standard system of scoring a bout.
5. The Mandatory Eight (8) Count after knockdowns will be standard procedure in all bouts.
6. All professional boxers are required to wear a mouthpiece during competition. The round cannot begin without the mouthpiece. If the mouthpiece is dislodged during competition, the referee will call time and have the mouthpiece replaced at the first opportune moment, without interfering with the immediate action. Points may be deducted by the referee if he feels the mouthpiece is being purposely spit out.
7. There is NO Standing Eight (8) Count.
8. There is NO Three (3) Knockdown Rule.
9. A boxer shall receive a twenty (20) second count if the boxer is knocked out of the ring. The boxer is to be unassisted by spectators or his/her seconds. If assisted by anyone, the boxer may lose points or be disqualified with such a decision being within the sole discretion of the referee.
10. A boxer who has been knocked down cannot be saved by the bell in any round.
11. If a boxer sustains an injury from a fair blow and the injury is severe enough to terminate the bout, the injured boxer shall lose by TKO.
12. Injuries sustained by Fouls:
A. Intentional Fouls
B. Accidental Fouls
a. Partial or incomplete rounds will be scored. If no action has occurred, the round should be scored as an even round. This is at the discretion of the judges.
13. A fighter who is hit with an accidental low blow must continue after a reasonable amount of time but no more than five (5) minutes, or he/she will lose the fight.

Jetro Pabustan recently competed in Vietnam against local cult boxer Le Hoang Hiep, so is sure to embrace the new year in career best shape.
One of the Philippines best performed international fighters of recent years Mark John Yap will treat boxing fans to the best new year's present possible - a Manila appearance on January 30 as a prelude to looking towards bigger overseas fights in 2023.
Yap returned home and put in a high quality performance in a WBA title clash with Charly Suarez, before overcoming PNG hard man Junior Kauko Raka in October of this year.
More recently, the star pinoy featured in a big show in Vietnam where he battled young gun Phan Minh Quân. The bout was unfortunately stopped due to an accidental head clash, with the cut requiring the CDO boxer to be stitched after the fight.
Not one to be deterred easily, Mark John Yap has informed that he will be in killer form on January 30 and he advises potential opponents - beware the Journey Man!

HÀ NỘI — A blockbuster "Fortunes of War" boxing event will bring together Asia's best fighters in 12 bouts, including three title matches, sanctioned by the IBF and WBO on December 10 at The Grand Hồ Tràm Strip, Bà Rịa Vũng Tàu Province.

The second title match is between IBF Asia super-featherweight Charly Suarez of the Philippines and Indonesian Defry Palulu in a 12-round bout.
Their match was scheduled in March 2020 but was cancelled due to the pandemic.
Suarez is a three-time SEA Games champion who won the 2014 Asian Games silver. He turned pro in 2019 and impressed the community with 13 wins with seven KOs.
Suarez has stayed busy this year as he fought for the WBA Asia title in March and defended it twice in July and October. He also won the Philippines national title in the process.
Palulu is currently No 1 in his country. He places 162 in the world with a record of 25 wins, two draws and two losses. He took the IBO Asia Pacific and WBC Asian Boxing Council super-featherweight belts in 2019.
"The Unseen Hammer" is in career-best shape and has been working on angles and power shots to halt the meteoric rise of Suarez.
