SANDSTROM WINS IBF TITLE IN SYDNEY

Linn Sandstrom, a professional Swedish boxer based in Australia , secured a unanimous decision victory over Yoselin Fernandez with scores of 98-83, 99-91, and 100-90 moments ago.
This impressive win tonight at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney earned Sandstrom the IBF International Super Flyweight title.

Sandstrom, a former world-title challenger, was always in control of a feisty Fernandez.
Trained by Tony Del Vecchio at the renowned Bondi Boxing Club in Australia, Sandstrom's hard work and dedication is reaping dividends despite only taking up the sport in her mid 20s.

VSP Promotions invited Sandstrom to compete in Vietnam in 2018 at the iconic Victory8 tournament.
Sandstrom's win tonight kicks off the Thurman-Jarvis prelims in Sydney, and marks a triumphant return to the ring for the Swedish boxer.
VICTORY8 HCMC - CLASS REUNION

VICTORY8 HCMC - CLASS REUNION

Back in 2018, at the very first VSP Promotions Victory8 event in Ho Chi Minh City, two talented Australian fighters—Mateo Tapia and Linn Sandstrom—showcased their skills on an international stage.
Both fighters were part of a strong Australian contingent that traveled to Vietnam to test themselves against the country’s elite boxing talent in what became a landmark event for the sport in the region.

Mateo Tapia, now an undefeated rising star with a current professional record of 17-0, headlined the Victory8 card in a highly anticipated showdown against Vietnamese boxing cult hero Truong Dinh Hoang.
The fight was a thrilling contest, cementing Tapia’s reputation as one of Australia’s most exciting prospects.
It also confirmed the world class credentials of SEA Games gold medalist Truong Dinh Hoang, who took on the challenge at very short notice.

Linn Sandstrom, originally from Sweden but now fighting out of Australia, also faced a formidable challenge that night, taking on Nguyen Thi Tam, Vietnam’s golden girl and former world number one.
Sandstrom’s willingness to fight the best early in her career (only 2 years boxing experience) has since shaped her into a serious contender in the professional ranks.

Fast forward to tomorrow night at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion, and both fighters are stepping into the ring for major title opportunities.

Mateo Tapia will take on Sergei Vorobev (20-2) of Russia for the IBF Intercontinental Middleweight title. This fight marks a crucial step toward a world title shot for Tapia, as a victory would propel him into the upper echelon of the division.

Linn Sandstrom is set to battle Yoselin Fernandez of Venezuela for the IBF International Super Flyweight belt. A win here would put Sandstrom on the path to a world title opportunity, solidifying her place among the best in the division.

Adding to the significance of the event, the night will be headlined by the return of former world champion Keith “One Time” Thurman.
The American boxing star, known for his power and skill, has only one loss in his much fabled career—a split decision defeat at the hands of the legendary Manny Pacquiao.

With Tapia and Sandstrom both fighting for prestigious IBF titles, this event could mark a defining moment in their careers, proving once again that they belong on the world stage.

SANDSTROM WINS WBA INTERCONTINENTAL

Congrats to Victory8 fighter Linn Sandström, who was successful in her WBA assault in York Hall London just moments ago. The Swedish boxer first appeared as a novice performer in Vietnam at Victory8 in 2018, where she challenged national champion Nguyễn Thi Tam at Nguyễn Du Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City.

Sandstrom has since forged a pro career and showed continued improvement, winning in Australia, the Philippines, Costa Rica and tonight's bout in England. Her WBA win over Croatian Sara Marjanovic was Linn Sandström's 7th in the paid ranks, and she's just getting started !

The Swedish fighter, trained in Australia by Tony Del Vecchio, scored a solid win to grab the belt from a Thai opponent that came to survive. It was Sandstrom's 6th win as a pro, and signaled better things to come.

And who better to compare notes with than the Wonder Boy himself, Carl Jammes Martin, who recently successfully defended the very same title!

ATTACK MAY PROVE THE BEST DEFENSE?

Aisah “D’Striker” Alico resumed from a three year break from the sport, when beaten by Swedish visitor Linn Sandstrom back in March.

Despite the defeat, there was plenty to like about her first up showing.

Alico showed lots of clever hands and spontaneous attack in that contest, whereas her defense was mitigated some by the fact that she had a very short preparation, and she was contesting a heavier and less suitable weight class.

Linn Sandstrom (who also appears on the card) had nothing but praise for her opponent:

“She hit me with some great shots, and her power really surprised me. Aisah is tough too, I think if she was fully fit then it would have been really hard to stop her. I’m sure she will improve a lot on today’s performance if she can get another fight soon”

Cagayan de Oro native Alico will take on Allen Joy Solidarios, a debutant from the Nietes Stable Negros Occidental. Not much is known about Solidarios, except she is young, fast and has potential. She will be well schooled, and she will definitely have good knowledge of the sort of threats that her opponent can bring to the ring.

This will be a much more suitable weight class for southpaw Alico, who will fight here at around 10 pounds lighter than her March outing. With 7 wins to her credit, Alico clearly has an experience edge on her rival, so expect to see her show a very offensive display when these two girls meet early next month in Paranaque.

LINN SANDSTROM LOVES PHILIPPINES !

Sweden's Linn Sandstrom had previously visited the Philippines for training camps back in 2019, and returned in March of this year to fight with Cagayan De Oro's Aisah Alico.

Both girls are back for ANNIHILATION UKC, but this time face different opponents. The "Sandstorm" has kept busy, winning bouts in Costa Rica and Australia since her Manila success.

"I love the Philippines, the people are warm like the weather. They always make me feel very welcome, it's almost like I'm an honorary citizen. I'm very excited to be back fighting there again, and really pumped to be on a card with so many great and talented boxers" enthused the Swedish slugger.

Linn Sandstrom will fight Thailand's Khwunchit Khunya in a 6 round bantamweight contest.

GREAT FIGHTS WITH FLAVOUR !!

GREAT FIGHTS WITH FLAVOUR !!

Some cracking undercard bouts, and the inclusion of some foreign invaders, just to add flavour!

Nguyen Van Hai from Vietnam makes his first international pro appearance when he takes on home boy Jerald Into. Hai is a master at many fight forms, and though he hasn't boxed for some time, his clash with the unbeaten Into will be one of the highlights of ANNIHILATION UKC.

Linn Sandstrom promised a busy 2022, and the popular Swedish up and comer returns after a successful March appearance with Aisah Alico. She matches up with Thailand visitor Khwunchit Khunya.

Mickey Pengue from Australia is an outstanding type, but was derailed in a regional belt fight recently after damaging his ear drum in the opening round. He is on a quick back up in Paranaque, looking to steady the ship against the solid Gerry Patenio. The local boxer showed good signs in his last fight against tall timber Al Cañega, so will be no pushover for the impressive Aussie.

Roland Jay Biendima is a dynamo, and after a quality showing against national Flyweight champ Ben Ligas, he scored an emphatic win over Powell Balaba. Rest assured, he will be looking to carry on the good work when he meets Joel Taduran.

We are going for an international flavour and have already secured Michael Pengue (Australia), Linn Sandstrom (Sweden) and the iconic Nguyễn Văn Hải (Vietnam) to come to Manila and mix it up with the Philippines fighters.

The biggest news is that Charly Suarez will defend his WBA belt, and we are very close to terms with a foreign opponent that claims he will halt the world title aspirations of the local star.

We say - bring it on!

This will be a MUST NOT MISS event,  big news breaking soon on the full fight card!

SANDSTROM GAINS MAJORITY DECISION

In a great and often see-sawing battle over 8 rounds, Linn Sandstrom gained a majority decision over a gritty Floryvic Montero.

In a match where both girls displayed good touches, it was perhaps the accuracy of Sandstrom that laid the platform for the win.

Philippines Montero looked excellent in patches, and no doubt contended with some ring rust, but showed she will be a vastly improved fighter at her next appearance.

SANDSTROM AND MONTERO WEIGH IN

Philippines Floryvic Montero and Sweden's Linn Sandstrom just made weight for tomorrow night's clash in Newcastle Australia.

Multi discipline fighter Montero was slightly the heavier, but both girls looked in great shape and are sure to create fireworks when the bell goes.

Sandstrom is now based in Australia, and was a recent visitor to Manila in March, where she fought on the undercard of the Charly Suarez v Tomjune Mangubat WBA title event.

CHECK THE WEATHER FORECAST, THERE'S A SANDSTORM COMING !

Recent Philippines visitor Linn "Sandstorm" Sandstrom returns to the ring in Newcastle, Australia next Wednesday night.

Linn takes on the very versatile pinay Floryvic Montero.

Sandstrom has made no secret of the fact that she is a relative newcomer to boxing, and is playing catch up to learn as much as she can in short time. The Swedish boxer has 4 wins on her resume, and the clash with Philippines Montero, should prove to be a great contest and valuable ring time for both girls.

And to think, Linn Sandstrom started out as a table tennis player !

This was very much "swimming with sharks" for Linn, who was matched with Vietnam national champion and SEA Games gold winner Nguyen Thi Tam. When this fight took place, Linn had been learning boxing for only 1.5 years!

Don't let it be said that Linn Sandstrom doesn't love a  decent challenge!

Linn Sandstrom is learning on the road, and will fight in Costa Rica on the undercard of world champ Yoka Valle's title defense.

It’s an honour to be a part on this ALL FEMALE Boxing Card over here in Costa Rica, in celebration of Womens Month together with some incredible girls on the card. Yoka is like the female version of Canelo, so I’m counting on a sold out venue and unreal atmosphere… I will be fighting a opponent from Nicaragua and this will be my 3rd professional fight in 22 days…" reported Sandstrom earlier today.
Linn has competed in Victory8 in Vietnam, and more recently, fought in Manila at TIGER 2022 UKC on the undercard of Charly Suarez v Tomjune Mangubat.

THANK YOU PHILIPPINES !

Sweden's Linn Sandstrom and Mindanao's Aisah Alico put on a great show for the fans at TIGER 2O22. For Sandstrom, it was a valuable learning fight, and for the more experienced Alico, a chance to get much needed ring time after a pandemic enforced absence. Kudos to local girl Alico, whilst short on fitness, the Swedish fighter said that she hit a lot harder than any previous opponent !

We wish the Aussie based "Sandstorm" lots of luck in her future fights, and love to see her back again in the Philippines if she is passing by.

Great win on foreign soil by Linn Sandstrom  against Mindanao girl Aisah Alico.

Despite showing caution, Sandstrom enjoyed the best of the action, and was the busier of the two boxers.

Aisah Alico looked comfortable Despite the fact she was largely in defensive mode, but was leveled with a decent Sandstrom body shot in the fifth round.

Nice win for the Swedish born Aussie Linn Sandstrom who says she LOVES THE PHILIPPINES !

D'STRIKER IS READY FOR A SANDSTORM !

Cagayan de Oro fighter Aisah "D'Striker" Alico has arrived in Manila, and is looking forward to her clash with Australia's Linn Sandstrom this Saturday.
Alico, who has 7 career wins (5KO), hasn't fought since March 2019, but has shared the ring previously with world class opponents. In contrast, Linn Sandstrom with 2 wins, is way less experienced, but has the advantage of being more recently active. The boxer known as "Sandstorm" had a solid victory in Brisbane last Thursday night at the No Limits Boxing show in Australia.
On arrival in Manila, the Mindanao girl said "It's HOT!" and headed straight to the pool for a cool down. Few could blame her, and for sure, expect things to get heated in her match this Saturday.

SANDSTROM LANDS IN MANILA

Australia's Linn Sandstrom has touched down in Manila, and headed straight to the Elorde Southbox gym first thing this morning to shake off the jet lag !

Swedish born Sandstrom, who only recently turned pro, scored her second win on Thursday night at the big No Limits Boxing event in Brisbane.

Sandstrom has an unusual back story, having formerly being a high level table tennis player in Sweden, before discovering her true passion for boxing once she arrived in Australia. A relatively late comer to the sport, Linn is on a fast track to learn the game, and her plan is, stay as busy as possible !

Linn Sandstrom will fight CDO girl Aisah Alico in the opening fight at TIGER 2O22 on Saturday. Alico has recorded 7 wins (5 KO), but may have to contend with ring rust having not competed since 2019.

CREATI AND SANDSTROM SCORE WINS

Big congrats to former Victory8 and world team members Danilo Creati and Linn Sandstrom on great wins in Brisbane last night.
"Dash" Creati put on a clinic, besting the outstanding Cameron Hammond, an Olympian who had won 18 of 19 pro fights. Creati was untouchable, winning by shutout and dropping his opponent twice during the contest.
Linn Sandstrom showed the benefits of a great camp, and better shot selection, in her victory over Ali Jensen. In an entertaining match, the Swedish born Sandstrom sent her opponent to the floor twice, but plenty of punches were still exchanged till the final bell.
Philippines Joe Noynay had a below par performance, stopped by a beautiful left hook in the second round from a vengeful Liam Wilson. Noynay weighed in 4kg over and his poor showing remains a puzzle.

Linn takes on CDO girl Aisah Alico, a winner of 7 fights, but she is resuming from a two year break from the sport.

"BE ATHLETIC" WHAT THE CHAMPS ARE WEARING !

The boxers competing at TIGER 2O22 Ultimate Knockout Challenge not only are super talented, they really look the part!
This is because of the cool and creative efforts of Raoul Navarrete and his team at Be Athletic, who look after not only the best athletes in the Philippines and abroad, they make these designs available to the fan market also.
Charly Suarez is out to make a statement on March 12th that he is the Philippines #1 fighter in any division, and he says he loves the Be Athletic gear.
We will show you the designs that some of the boxers have had customized in the coming days - they are amazing !
Even visiting boxer Linn Sandstrom (Australia ) was so impressed, she has had her outfit made by Be Athletic.
So get with the program, if you wanna BE ATHLETIC, (and look great) contact them for all your fight and Activewear needs.

Thanks Raoul Navarrete and Be Athletic !

THE GIRLS ARE BACK IN TOWN !
February 16, 2022

THE GIRLS ARE BACK IN TOWN !

Mindanao fighter Aisah Alico returns to the ring for the first time since early 2019. This southpaw from CDO is an experienced and internationally travelled war monger, and has some of the best fighters in the minimumweight division on her resume. She makes her return here as a flyweight, and despite being able to easily attain the lighter weight class, she comes to TIGER 2022 at the identical height of opponent Linn Sandstrom.
“D’Striker “ is perfectly monikered as she has really good hands, and she does create awkward angles from her southpaw stance. Ring rust may play a big part here for Alico, as her opponent has the advantage of recent competition. But for sure, experience is the trump card for Aisah, having shared the ring with top names like Yuko Kuroki, Momo Koseki, Ayaka Miyao and Philippines’ Jess Pagaduan.
The lack of recent form makes this match up tricky to pick, but it must be said, the CDO based Alico has defeated more experienced girls than Sandstrom in her 7 previous wins. She has also stopped 5 opponents along the way. Hmmmmm!
One thing is for certain though, it is great to have women’s boxing finally back in action once more!
GO GIRLS!!!

FROM TABLE TENNIS TO BOXING TO MANILA !
February 15, 2022

FROM TABLE TENNIS TO BOXING TO MANILA !

2021 was a regrettable year of gym closures, lockdowns, and quarantine bubbles. That not only made putting on an event extremely expensive and difficult, it made including women near impossible.
But all good things come to those who wait, and finally next month, TIGER 2022 sees Linn Sandstrom (1 win) of Australia (by way of Sweden), take on Mindanao’s Aisah Alico (7 wins).
Despite the relative inexperience of Sandstrom , she is on a fast track to learn, and has an interesting back story.
The Brazilian-born fighter was raised in Sweden, where she fell in love with table tennis, and went on to represent her country in the sport.
“Everyone back in Sweden knew me as the girl who played table tennis”
“It is (quite a leap to go from table tennis to boxing), but I’ve been an athlete my whole life so that athlete lifestyle is what I love.”
Sandstrom moved to Australia five years ago and got serious with her ambition to become a pro boxer. While there were skills she picked up in table tennis that came in handy — like hand-eye coordination and footwork — the fight game has one major difference.
“A lot of things are similar except you don’t get punched in the face when you do table tennis,” she said.
Sandstrom will fight Aisah Alico, a southpaw from Cagayan de Oro, before venturing to the States and central America to get some quality sparring. Her ambition is to string some wins together in 2022, and perhaps challenge some bigger names as the gloves start to feel as comfortable as the table tennis racket!
“I’ve had people that really, really want to see me fail. I’m a female that, I’m not just there to say I’m going to do things, I’m here to put in the work and that seems to irritate a lot of people.
“I’m doing me, this is my journey. I’m here to stay now, I’m here to prove a point.”

WE WUZ ROBBED!!!

"WE WUZ ROBBED ! :
Chavit Singson expresses outrage over ruling
‘The world wants to see this match.
We want it as soon as possible.’

Charly Suarez has moved on from the heartbreaking loss to Mexican banger Emanuel Navarrete and is looking forward to a rematch.

But Suarez’s camp hasn’t with chief handler--Ilocos political kingpin Luis “Chavit” Singson--leading the charge in assailing the controversial eighth-round technical decision victory handed over to Navarrete after their San Diego showdown last 10 May.

“We got rigged. Everyone thought we had won the fight but only the referee and the ringside doctor went against us,” Singson told reporters during a Q&A with reporters on Sunday at his Quezon City residence.

“Instead of giving us the fight, they ruled it a No-Contest,” said Singson, who is now keeping his fingers crossed that the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) would change the technical decision defeat by Suarez to a technical knockout (TKO) victory and not a No-Contest.

Suarez returned from the United States last Friday, still reeling from the harrowing experience but apparently overjoyed by the massive support he has been receiving after his gutsy showing against the heavily-favored Navarrete.

Referee Ed Collantes called a halt to the fight just one second into the eighth round upon the recommendation of ringside physician Robert Ruelaz after examining Navarrete’s cut for the third time.

Collantes had ruled earlier that the nasty gash above Navarrete’s left eyebrow was caused by an accidental clash of heads and not a punch.

But repeated high-definition television replays later revealed that the cut was opened by Suarez’s left hand, leaving some officials at Top Rank, the promotional outfit that staged the fight, to assure Suarez and his handlers that a rematch is in the offing.

But there is no timeline yet since the CSAC is still meeting on 2 June to discuss the protest filed by Suarez.

Singson said he would like to see the CSAC issue the correct ruling, stressing that he doesn’t have any issues with a rematch, or even a third fight if the need arises.

The boxing world raised a howl over the official decision and Filipino-American Ric Navalta, who represented Singson in America, insists the holding a second meeting is the right thing to do.

"The world wants to see this match. We want it as soon as possible,” he said.

Delfin Boholst, who trains Suarez, swears his fighter was on his way to stopping Navarrete but their luck just ran out.

“The reason they stopped the fight even if the severity of the cut was not that serious was because they all knew Navarrete was leading on the scorecards,” Boholst said.

“Charly was finding his range and it was just a matter of time before he scores a stoppage,” added Boholst, who joined Suarez during their national team days.

Suarez, 36, feels he was supremely confident of scoring a TKO.

“His punches were no longer that strong unlike in the first three rounds when I really felt them,” Suarez said.

As the CSAC deliberate on the case, Suarez’s outlook is one of pushing forward.

“As a boxer, my role is to fight and win. The decision’s not within my control but I am hoping that the decision (by the CSAC) is going to be favorable.”

Regardless of what happens, Suarez would welcome another chance to slug with Navarrete.

Asked whether it’s going to be easier the second time around, Suarez answered in the negative.

“No, it’s not. It’s going to be a tough fight,” he said calmly.

Meanwhile, the entire team is still raging over the result.

JONNIEL LAURENTE SHOWDOWN IN TOKYO

Jonniel Laurente vs. Shigetoshi Kotari Set for Showdown in Tokyo – “Pioneer of Fight Vol. 10”

All eyes turn to Korakuen Hall in Tokyo tomorrow, for the super featherweight clash between the Philippines’ Jonniel Laurente and Japan’s Shigetoshi Kotari.
The bout headlines “Pioneer of Fight Vol. 10”

Both fighters successfully made weight earlier today, with Laurente stepping in at 129.1 lbs and Kotari slightly heavier at 129.8 lbs.

Shigetoshi Kotari is currently ranked #207 in the world at super featherweight.
The tall 5'11" orthodox fighter is known for his sharp footwork and cracking jab that keeps opponents at bay. A well ranked fighter domestically in Japan, he is coming off a confident decision win over Riki Hamada in November 2024.

Jonniel Laurente enters the ring ranked #295 globally.
A gritty and cerebral 5'7" southpaw, Laurente fights out of the legendary Elorde Gym in Manila—a breeding ground for Filipino boxing talent.
His technical boxing style, lefty angles, and ring savvy make him a dangerous opponent for anyone on the rise.

Whilst not a title fight, this international matchup holds significant implications for both boxers' career trajectories.
For Kotari, it’s a chance to defend home turf and inch closer to world-level contention.
For Laurente, it’s a golden opportunity to upset the odds and make a statement on Japanese soil.

“Pioneer of Fight Vol. 10” continues to spotlight the next generation of Asian boxing talent, and this bout between Kotari and Laurente could steal the show.

Fans should expect a tactical chess match early, with Kotari using his reach and jab to control range, while Laurente looks to close the distance, land his straight left, and test the Japanese fighter’s body.

BACONAJE LOOKS TO CONQUER FUJI !!

The Silencer has arrived in Japan and made weight for his bout with Rentaro Kimura, scheduled for tomorrow at the FujisanMesse in Fuji, Shizuoka, Japan.

Baconaje has battled previously in Japan, most particularly due to fighting bigger weight class boxers of very high calibre - and tomorrow is no different.
He will compete in tge Lightweight 61kg category, up from his most suited Super Featherweight division.
That aside, Arnel Baconaje is a high level campaigner that brings a ton of trouble even to larger opposition.

So how do they line up for tomorrow's big clash ?

Arnel Baconaje (Philippines)

Record: 18 wins, 9 losses, with 13 knockouts

Recent Performance: Baconaje is seeking his first victory in Japan after three previous losses there. He is coming off a first-round technical knockout win over Glenn Bismanos earlier this year.

Rentaro Kimura (Japan)

Record: 9 wins, 1 loss, with 5 knockouts

Recent Performance: Kimura is on a winning streak, having secured a first-round knockout against Yuri Takemoto in his last fight. He has also defeated two other Filipino boxers, Jess Rhey Waminal and Jason Buenaobra.

Both fighters successfully made weight ahead of the bout and as you can see in the pics, are in great shape.
This match is part of the Phoenix Battle series, a prominent boxing event in Japan.
This bout presents an opportunity for Baconaje to secure his first win in Japan, while Kimura aims to continue his winning streak against Filipino opponents.

Filipino-Swedish fighter Alexander

Fredriksson came in with just a 2-0 record, but he showed that skill and youth can overcome experience. He scored a big win over 🇵🇭Mark John Yap, a seasoned veteran with over 50 fights and a former OPBF Bantamweight champ who has competed in seven different countries.

Fredriksson was dropped in the first round but came back strong. Yap hit the canvas in the sixth, and after six rounds, Alexander earned a unanimous decision win with scores of 58-54.

With the victory, Fredriksson improves to 3-0, 2 KOs, while Yap drops to 34-20, 17 KOs.

Amateur vs Professional boxer...WHO WINS?

KUMBATI 19 TURNS IT ON FOR THE FANS

Mark John Yap and Alexander Fredrikkson just made weight for what is undoubtedly the most interesting and talked about match up in the Philippines this year !

The final face-off completed, Fredriksson and Yap looked in cracking shape, and recorded on the scales :

Alexander “The Showtime” Fredriksson - 133. 2
Mark John “The Journey Man” Yap - 133.7

Will Fredrikkson's youth and outstanding amateur pedigree prevail ?
Or will Mark John Yap, who has notched up 34 pro wins, and has fought against many of the world's best, simply ask too many hard questions of the top prospect and show him it's age before beauty !!

We have a great and highly debated fight here in Cebu tomorrow !!

YAP : "I'M GOING TO ASK HARD QUESTIONS !!"

YAP : "I'M GOING TO ASK HARD QUESTIONS !!"

Mark John Yap, pictured steep in the mountains of Cagayan de Oro earlier today, seems as EVERGREEN as his surrounds !
The "Journey Man" heads off to Cebu this afternoon, in readiness for tomorrow's weigh in for the Omega show this coming Friday.

"I feel very good, I haven't been doing much boxing, but running has kept me fit."
Yap is resuming from a loss in Surigao to unbeaten prospect Jerald Into, a hell fight that tortured both boxers to the point of failure.
Into has since jumped in weight class to 140lb, and was dominant in winning at the WBC tournament in Saudi Arabia.

"That fight was very hard. Jerald is a good boxer and above my weight class, but I was confident in my ability to win. But he was stronger than I expected, and my team didn't see that he had collapsed on his stool. So maybe if we saw that, the result is different, but I also felt ready to die "
quipped Yap.

About his upcoming bout with rising star Alexander Fredrikkson, Yap is equal parts excited and very relaxed.

"This was the boy I was meant to fight earlier this year, but GAB canceled. Thankfully we have another chance.
This is a good boxer, and I can see he has two knockouts in two fights. He has a lot of wins to come. But not on Friday !
Professional boxing is a hard game, and very different to the amateurs that he comes from.

It takes time to learn the tricks.
On Friday, we will get to see if Fredrikkson can be a good boxer when I am landing shots on him.

This will be his exam - and I will ask him hard questions.
Some I know for sure, he won't be able to answer !"
EYES WIDE SHUT
May 13, 2025

EYES WIDE SHUT

MAYBE HIS EYES WERE CLOSED AT THE TIME !
Referees are required to make quick judgments, often in unfortunate situations where their vision is obscured. And it's fair to assume at World Title level, we are seeing the absolute elite in referees and judges to officiate these big fights.

Many tendered that referee Edward Collantes was perhaps not in a position to adjudicate the cause of the Navarrete cut, and in the absence of obvious proof of a punch, defaulted to safer ground and declared a headbutt.
Seems reasonable !!

But in this picture, we see compelling evidence that the besieged Collantes had a perfect view.

He's right there in front think "Aargh - that's gotta hurt Vaquero ! C'mon man, pick up your game - this Suarez kid is punching holes in you now !"
This call by Edward Collantes is definitely just too hard to explain !!

On June 2nd, hopefully the California commission will make reparations to a joint mess created by both Edward Collantes and themselves.
In the meantime, reacquaint yourselves with the rules pertaining to accidental headbutts and the referees role in declaring :

The Unified Rules of Boxing don't explicitly state what a referee should do if they can't see the cause of a cut due to n vision. However, according to the rules regarding accidental fouls.

Accidental Fouls: If an accidental foul causes an injury severe enough for the referee to stop the bout, the outcome depends on the number of rounds completed.

Before 4 Rounds: No decision is rendered, resulting in a "No Decision".

After 4 Rounds: The bout goes to a Technical Decision, with the winner determined by the scorecards.

In cases where a headbutt is involved, the referee's judgment plays a crucial role. While there's no specific passage detailing obscured vision, referees are expected to:

Determine Cause: Decide whether a cut was caused by a punch or a head collision.
Consult Ringside Physician: If necessary, consult with the physician to assess the injury.

Given the lack of specific guidance on obscured vision, referees likely rely on their experience and discretion to handle such situations.
SUAREZ : THE DAY AFTER THE WAR

SUAREZ : THE DAY AFTER THE WAR

Most guys aren't so fortunate to get out of the ring unscathed after a war with Emanuel Navarrete.

Charly is looking bright as a button, and ready to go again !
He also had some interesting insights after yesterday's battle.

Charly said that he fought a completely different style yesterday to his normal, with the objective of tiring and knocking out his opponent.
He believed that even if he boxed and won every round, he would not get the judges' decisions.
He would need to KNOCKOUT Navarrete to win !

He also made these comments about the champion :

"He is a very strong and tough fighter. But his shots aren't as powerful as people think, and he never hurt me.
His punch is different. It's like a strong push and it can put you off balance, and he is very good at splitting the guard.
When I went backwards, I was trying to trick him to lean forward for my counter, but I lost balance sometimes because of his awkward pushing and punching.

I was never worried about his power, but in rounds 6 and 7, his punch became a lot weaker. He was standing in bad position to get hit, and I hit him a lot more.

I respect him, he is a warrior, but I was just warming up and he was breathing hard and making mistakes.

I know in my heart, he would not have finished the fight. "

REMATCH COMING UP

ROBBERY TO BE DOWNGRADED: NO CONTEST ?

SAN DIEGO – The California State Athletic Commission is expected to convert Emanuel Navarrete’s controversial technical decision victory over Charly Suarez to a no-contest, BoxingScene learned Saturday night.

A cut at Navarrete’s left eyebrow in the sixth round had been ruled the result of an accidental clash of heads. The fight ended at the start of the eighth and was sent to the scorecards. In the hours after an immediate judgment was made to award Navarrete the WBO junior lightweight title fight victory at Pechanga Arena, a subsequent replay emerged showing the champion’s cut was caused by challenger Charly Suarez’s left-handed punch.

If that had been the final decision in the minutes after ringside physician Dr. Robert Ruelaz ruled the fight to be stopped, Suarez would have been declared the winner by technical knockout.

Instead, referee Edward Collantes immediately ruled that the clash of heads caused the cut, and video replay official Jack Reiss said there was no conclusive evidence from the initial scenes he reviewed to overturn that call.

“Our rules on replay say unless it’s undisputed, the referee’s call shall stand, and this was very disputable," Reiss told BoxingScene. “I had quite a few looks at it. But nothing up close. And nothing at the correct angle.”

However, the later footage revealed Suarez’s punch opened the cut, and that has convinced the California commission to adapt, and label the outcome a no-contest that will provoke a rematch ordered by the WBO.

Following Saturday night’s confusing events, both fighters provided divergent explanations.

While the Philippines’ Suarez insisted his punch opened Navarrete’s cut, the champion from Mexico maintained it was Suarez’s head that caused a cut “two layers deep” and forced the bout’s outcome to the scorecards, which were returned 77-76 (Lou Moret), 78-75 (Pat Russell), 77-76 (Fernando Villareal) in Navarrete’s favor.

“I felt it was a headbutt. I saw the review. It seems like a punch, but it exploded two layers of skin,” Navarrete said to reporters while standing as the winner. “I didn’t want it to end. I was fine to keep going. I felt like the best rounds were still to come. But the doctor stopped the fight.”

He agreed Suarez gave him a demanding bout, and said, “He would be a great opponent. He is a great opponent. So a rematch would be good.”

Suarez, who took an 18-0 record into the bout, said he feels a rematch is justified given the dispute over the way it was settled.

“I thought I had a chance to win the fight. I had five more rounds to try to win,” if the bout hadn’t been stopped, Suarez said.

The fight was a highly entertaining scrap that saw both men swing for the proverbial fences, with each rocked in various moments.

Suarez said it reminded him of countryman Manny Pacquiao’s epic brawls with Mexican warriors, including Juan Manuel Marquez, Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera.

Suarez said he was saddened by the turn of events against him, but obeying the rulings instead of vehemently arguing with officials.

“I respect Navarrete because he’s a good boxer, and he’ll give me a chance to rematch after a fight that was entertaining,” Suarez said. “I’m sad, but I have the hope they will give me another chance. Maybe next time.”

Top Rank Vice President of Operations Carl Moretti immediately said after the bout that he would push for a rematch.

Navarrete had great difficulty making weight for the 130lbs title defense, but he said he didn’t feel weakened during the bout and he’ll decide during the two-month cut healing period if he’ll remain as champion or try again at lightweight after a title-fight loss at 135lbs last year.

“You saw the level of that fight and how it developed – in the seven rounds, I think we threw more punches than all of those fights [Canelo Alvarez-William Scull, Devin Haney-Jose Ramirez] last weekend,” Navarrete said. “I felt good. I felt competent. There were opponents you can say he made me look limited, but there were alternatives.

“Yes, there was pressure in making weight – 0.4 pounds with time against [me]. But the weight was made, I recovered, I felt good in there.

“The work we did in the fight is the work we planned.

“I’ll see what comes and make a decision,” on the rematch.

NAVARRETE MISSES THE WEIGHT!

NAVARRETE MISSES THE WEIGHT!

NAVARRETE MISSES WEIGHT!!!
It took 3 visits to the scales, and a very unhealthy looking Emanuel Navarrete was finally passed for tomorrow's WBO World Title bout in San Diego against Philippines' Charly Suarez.

Navarrete, the current WBO junior lightweight champion, really struggled to make weight, initially missing the 130-pound limit by 0.4 pounds.
He needed most of the two-hour allotted time to trim the remaining weight, finally dipping to 130 pounds after an anguished expression and a groan when he was told he was still 0.2 pounds overweight.

"It hurts for a day, and then it's better the next day," Navarrete said about the weight cut.
Navarrete's matchmaker, Brad Goodman, noted that Navarrete might have chosen Suarez because he's a technical fighter with movement, which could pose problems for Navarrete.
"The last guy I would’ve picked is Suarez, because he’s a right-handed Denys Berinchyk. He’s going to chase Suarez down. Suarez switches lefty to righty. And it’s been seen already that he has problems with movers."

Suarez, on the other hand, made weight easily on his first try at 129.9 pounds.
"I will do my best. I've dreamed of this," Suarez said, raising his arms while on the scale. Suarez is treating this opportunity as a once-in-a-lifetime shot, knowing that there may never be another moment like this.
"This fight is a big answered prayer for me because we trained for this fight and this is my shot. I've been looking for this fight since two years ago".

Suarez's trainer believes Navarrete is still a dangerous fighter despite being 1-1-1 in his last three bouts.
"He's different from before. There's a lot of fights, a lot of sparring, so it's possible that he's changed his style and power," Suarez said about Navarrete .

The winner of this fight could set up a potential bout against Andres Cortes, with Goodman saying, "Navarrete is a real strong guy, and I expect him to assert that."

Navarrete's victory would allow him to join countrymen Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Rafael Espinoza in successful title defenses.

But perhaps Suarez is the final nail in the coffin that ensures this fight is one too many at 130-pound for the reigning champ Emanuel Navarrete.
"IT WILL BE EASY FOR HIM I BELIEVE"

"IT WILL BE EASY FOR HIM I BELIEVE"

Vietnam fight legend Nguyễn Văn Hải is predicting former opponent Charly Suarez to win the world title this Sunday against reigning champ Emanuel Navarrete.

"It will be easy for him i believe - he will win.
Charly he is an all round fighter, and Navarrete has never been in the ring with his equal.

Charly is the devil in contemporary boxing !!
And I have experienced and learned many lessons first hand - so I know what he can do.

Charly is as fast as a squirrel.
He strikes so quickly and often.
His accuracy is quite amazing, and I have never suffered it in my career like I did with Charly.

His opponents do not have enough time and space to work.
It is very confusing.
And it feels like you can get tired without landing shots. He is very hard to hit, and very good at counter.
If you make mistake, you have to pay. He is the devil.

This will be the same experience for Emanuel Navarrete. He will have to pay too !

Charly Suarez will win.
"CHARLY WILL REALLY SURPRISE HIM !!"
May 9, 2025

"CHARLY WILL REALLY SURPRISE HIM !!"

The morning before weigh in for the most important fight of his life - and you wouldn't know it !
Charly Suarez looks hydrated and in amazing condition, and at 131lb is only just over his scheduled weight.
It is hard to imagine opponent Emanuel Navarrete is enjoying things as much, as he has suffered some challenges making 130lb in past contests.

"Charly is in great shape and we had a very good preparation. " reported trainer Delfin Boholst.

"He is very relaxed, in fact it's me who is far more nervous!
We have studied our opponent a lot and have received much good advice from trainers who have experience with Navarrete.

To beat a champion like Emanuel Navarrete is of course not easy, but we are very confident in our fight plan.

Charly will really surprise him this Saturday night ".

SCARED CAT CORTES DISSES SUAREZ

"SCAREDY CAT" CORTES DISSES CHARLY BOY
Main undercard bout fighter Andres Cortes gives Charly Suarez no hope against reigning champ and red-hot favourite Emanuel Navarrete this Sunday in San Diego.

Whilst the boxer had words to say in dismissing Suarez's chances (even predicting his demise by knockout) - he failed to come clean about his team's decision to leave the unbeaten Filipino at the altar for a World Title eliminator late last year !

Now the scaredy-cat braggard is even talking up his next match with the champion Navarrete !

Andres Cortes favors Emanuel Navarrete over Charly Suarez :
*courtesy of BoxingScene

Junior lightweight contender Andres Cortes favors Emanuel Navarrete over Charly Suarez. Regardless of the outcome, he wants to fight the winner.

Cortes fights Salvador Jimenez in a 10-round bout on May 10 at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego, California. The bout will be on the undercard of Navarrete-Suarez, which will be for the WBO junior lightweight title.

The 27-year-old Cortes, 22-0 (12 KOs), knows of Suarez well. They were scheduled to fight in September. Cortes of Las Vegas believes that Navarette will be leaving victorious in the main event.

“It could be difficult in the beginning, but he should end up finishing that guy, that's me being honest,” Cortes told BoxingScene. “I was supposed to fight Suarez. I did study him, so I know how it's going to go down.”

Cortes further explained the flaw he sees in the undefeated Suarez, 18-0 (11 KOs). Suarez, a 36-year-old fighter from Davao del Norte province in the Philippines, enters with 123 rounds of professional experience. Navarrete, a multi-division titleholder, enters with double the experience in terms of professional rounds at 246.

“His professional experience is very low,” Cortes said. “He hasn't fought anyone. He hasn't been hit with a hard shot. So, now he's going to go in there and fight a guy who hits hard. He's most likely going to fold.”

Cortes will be returning to the ring after nearly an 11-month break. He commented on his layoff and believes it was a positive.

“I had a good little break. I think I needed that mentally,” Cortes said. “I'm dying to get back in the ring. I want to stay busy and keep fighting. So, we get this fight out of the way and start looking for another one right away.”

An interesting subplot is that the 30-year-old Navarrete, 39-2-1 (32 KOs), suffered a loss a year ago at the same arena. Navarrete of San Juan Zitlaltepec, Mexico, was attempting to become a four-division world champion, but lost to Denys Berinchyk. Since that bout, Navarrete returned to defeat Oscar Valdez in December.

Cortes wants the winner of the main event, even stating that a fight between himself and Navarrete could be one of the best of the year.

“I would have been willing to go toe to toe with Navarrete for 12 rounds,” Cortes said. ”I think that's what the fans want to see. We could have delivered a fight of the year.”

BREAKING !! PACQUIAO SET FOR JULY RETURN

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has confirmed Barrios’ belt to be on the line for their planned showdown this summer, suggesting that an official announcement from Premier Boxing Champions should be imminent.

“At this time, Mario Barrios is going to fight Manny Pacquiao in July,” Sulaiman told Boxing King Media.

“That’s a tremendous fight. Manny Pacquiao’s first [world] title was at flyweight – with the WBC – and [now] he wants to retire as the WBC champion, so he’s fighting in the welterweight division.”

Pacquiao hasn’t fought professionally since suffering a unanimous decision loss to Yordenis Ugas in August 2021.
He is 46 years of age, and while it's oft quoted you can't beat Father Time, it may not be equally applicable to an 8 division world champ !

"THERE'S NO MORE TOMORROW "

Great article published today by Australia's Liahm O'brien.
There's some great insights into the upcoming world title bout with Navarrete.
Charly Suarez states that despite his late start in the pros, he is determined to make his own piece of Philippines 🇵🇭 sporting history.

"My dream is that I’m still undefeated until I retire from boxing. In the Philippines, there’s no boxers that stopped boxing undefeated.
For me, I’ll make my own name for that area.”

And despite being a huge underdog in the betting against champion Emanuel Navarrete, Suarez adds this pledge to the Philippines fans :

“Confidently and by God’s grace, I’ll try my best, and with the help of my team, we will beat him in this fight. This is it. This is my time, and this is a big opportunity to come to us. No matter what happens, I will win the fight. This is a big moment, a big opportunity that has come into my life, a one-in-a-million moment. I don’t want to lose it.”

OPBF TITLES ARE COMING TO VIETNAM

OPBF TITLES ARE COMING TO VIETNAM 🇻🇳
Great news for local Vietnamese fighters is the "hot off the press" announcement of the OPBF's upgraded Executive team - and the inclusion of the locally based Lim Song.

VBO's president Dr. Lim Song has accepted the role of Asia Region Coordinator along with Samson Iu and John Hoang of KBM.
In this role, Dr. Song will coordinate OPBF events in Asia with particular focus on South Asia, which includes all OPBF titles in Vietnam.
All promoters are requested to submit their fight proposal to Dr. Song for support and guidance.

The OPBF (Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation) is a regional boxing organization that operates under the umbrella of the World Boxing Council (WBC). It oversees professional boxing across Asia and the Pacific region.

Key Facts About OPBF Titles:
Full Name: Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation
Founded: 1952
Affiliated With: World Boxing Council (WBC)

Region Covered: Asia and the Pacific (includes countries like Japan, Philippines, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Indonesia, etc.)
and now - VIETNAM 🇻🇳 !!!

Purpose of OPBF Titles:
To provide a regional stepping stone for fighters aiming for world titles.
To give rankings, title opportunities, and recognition to top fighters in the region.
Winning an OPBF title can often boost a fighter's world ranking, especially in the WBC system.

Why OPBF Titles Matter:
OPBF champions are often scouted by international promoters and sanctioning bodies.
Holding an OPBF title can lead to bigger fights and potential world title eliminators.
It’s considered one of the most prestigious regional titles in Asian boxing - most especially in Japan.

Many great fighters have contested for the prestigious belt, and here are some of the best known former OPBF champions:

Manny Pacquiao (Philippines) – Held the OPBF flyweight title early in his career before becoming an 8-division world champion.

Naoya Inoue (Japan) – Won the OPBF light flyweight title before becoming an undisputed world champion in multiple weight classes.

Kostya Tszyu (Australia) – Former OPBF light welterweight champion who became a unified world champion and Hall of Famer.

Takashi Uchiyama (Japan) – OPBF super featherweight champ who went on to have a long reign as WBA world champion.

Chris John (Indonesia) – Held the OPBF featherweight title before his long world title run.

JINO HAS OSCAR LOOKING WORRIED !

This Saturday, April 19 (tomorrow in Asia), Jino Rodrigo from the Philippines will face world #1 amateur-turned-professional Ruslan Abdullaev at Frontwave Arena in Oceanside, California.
Abdullaev is a big money investment for Oscar De La Hoya, and despite being a big outsider in the betting, the physical appearance of Rodrigo at today's weigh in clearly has the notorious cross dresser more than a little nervous.
Rodrigo was brought in at ridiculously short notice as a means to give Abdullaev an easy kill - but obviously, the Golden Boy was surprised the battle ready physique of the "upset minded" pinoy.
The fight will be broadcast live worldwide on DAZN from 5 PM PT.

Jino Rodrigo has been active and in good form, winning 4 of his last 5 fights by knockout. He recently took a close loss to top contender Elvis Rodriguez but showed strong performance, including scoring a knockdown.
Rodrigo accepted this fight on short notice but has stayed in training since his last bout in March.

Abdullaev, a 2024 Olympian from Uzbekistan, made a strong professional debut under Golden Boy Promotions, winning by second-round knockout. This will be his second professional fight.

Date: Saturday, April 19

IT’S FIGHT NIGHT FOR JERALD INTO !

WBC Grand Prix:
Jerald Into vs. Ahmad Muhammad Jones
Live from the Global Theater, Riyadh City – TONIGHT!

Two unbeaten prospects.
One ticket to the next round.
No room for error.

Jerald “Truman” Into (11-0, 9 KOs), the pride of Zamboanga and reigning WBC Asia champ, steps up in weight tonight to test himself at 140 pounds. Known for his long jabs from southpaw stance, and high workrate combined with knockout power, Into brings his Filipino fire to the global stage.

Across from him stands Ahmad Muhammad Jones (10-0, 7 KOs), a heavy-handed and sharp technician out of Maryland, USA.
Seasoned in the super lightweight ranks, Jones is shorter at 5’5” but stocky, explosive, and built to break through any guard.

This clash of styles—slick southpaw vs. compact power puncher—could steal the show in the WBC Grand Prix, part of Riyadh Season’s blockbuster tournament featuring 128 fighters across four weight classes.
With no draws allowed and open scoring after Rounds 2 and 4, expect urgency from the opening bell.

Stream it LIVE on DAZN.
Only one leaves undefeated.

Also watch out for these other super lightweight standouts:
Eric Basran (Canada)
Danylo Lozan (Ukraine)
Kamronbek Eshmatov (Uzbekistan)
Hassan Hamdan (Australia)

JINO RODRIGO MEETS WORLD #1 ABDULLAEV

JINO RODRIGO MEETS WORLD #1 ABDULLAEV

Jino Rodrigo has been in outstanding form of late, exuding a brand of violence that is equal parts shock and awe, and no doubt his secret to it all :

TRAIN HARD - STAY BUSY !!

Jino has also taken his most recent  fights in the United States on very short notice against top opposition, and this Sunday he continues on that path tackling his most formidable task yet !

Standing in his way will be World #1 amateur and recent Golden Boy signing Ruslan Abdullaev  !!

Yes, you heard right.

Golden Boy.

They love to protect their new signings, and extremely LATE CALL UPS is one of their most common tricks to make sure an opponent is way below their best.

That said, Jino Rodrigo has stayed in shape since a very recent knockout performance in March, and he's more than grateful to get the fight with hot prospect Ruslan Abdullaev.

So here's how they line up :

Fight Night Alert: Ruslan Abdullaev vs. Jino Rodrigo – This Saturday on DAZN

All eyes turn to Oceanside, California this Saturday, April 19, as world number one amateur-turned-pro Ruslan Abdullaev steps into the ring for his second professional bout at Frontwave Arena — broadcast live worldwide on DAZN from 5 PM PT.

The 2024 Uzbekistan Olympian made waves in his pro debut under the Golden Boy Promotions banner, delivering a clinical second-round knockout against Jose Alvarado. Abdullaev’s speed, precision, and composure were on full display, making it clear: the amateur king is now hunting crowns in the pro ranks.

But standing in his way is Jino Rodrigo, a dangerous late replacement from the Philippines who’s far from just filling a slot.

Rodrigo has quietly built a reputation as a fight-finisher — winning 4 of his last 5 by stoppage.

His only recent loss came against red-hot contender Elvis Rodriguez, and even then, Rodrigo dropped Rodriguez early and had him reeling before losing a close decision.

He’s been staying sharp, and with nothing to lose, he’s coming to shock the boxing world.

The stage is set:

Date: Saturday, April 19

Time: 5 PM PT

Location: Frontwave Arena, Oceanside, CA

Record: 23 Wins – 5 Losses – 2 Draws

Knockouts: 14 KOs (60.87% KO rate)

Ranking: #13 in the world / #4 in the Philippines

Career: 2012 – 2024

Age: 31

Stance: Southpaw

Height: 5′3″ (160 cm)

Residence/Birthplace: General Santos City, Philippines

Total Bouts: 32 (189 Rounds)

Recent Form (Last 5 Fights):

2024-12-27: Def. Ariston Aton (W-UD 8/8)

2024-08-30: Def. Jonathan Refugio (W-RTD 5/12)

2024-07-11: Def. Pablito Balidio (W-KO 1/8)

2023-07-12: Def. Clyde Azarcon (W-TKO 4/8)

2022-12-04: Def. Kenichi Horikawa (W-TKO 7/12)

Analysis:

Canoy is an experienced and battle-tested fighter, with over a decade in the sport and nearly 200 rounds under his belt. He has faced tougher opposition, including veterans like Kenichi Horikawa, and is riding a strong win streak. His southpaw stance adds a tactical dimension, often challenging for orthodox opponents. He blends power with durability, having only been stopped twice in 32 fights.

SAM MINH PHAT (Leopard Kim)

Record: 10 Wins – 5 Losses – 0 Draws

Knockouts: 8 KOs (80% KO rate)

Ranking: #67 in the world / #1 in Vietnam

Career: 2017 – 2025

Age: 30

Stance: Orthodox

Height: 5′3″ (160 cm)

Residence/Birthplace: Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Total Bouts: 15 (67 Rounds)

Recent Form (Last 5 Fights):

2025-02-20: Def. Ne Lin Aung (W-TKO 2/6)

2023-07-15: Lost to DianXing Zhu (L-RTD 9/10)

2022-07-30: Def. Heri Purnomo (W-TKO 2/8)

2022-04-23: Def. Le Dieu Phuoc (W-TKO 5/6)

2021-10-23: Lost to ArAr Andales (L-TKO 7/12)

Analysis:

Sam Minh Phat is an explosive, aggressive puncher with a high KO ratio. Despite only 15 professional bouts, his fights tend to end early, showing that he thrives on fast starts and power shots. However, his losses to more seasoned opponents (like ArAr Andales) expose vulnerabilities in stamina and ring IQ against experienced fighters. He’s a rising star in Vietnam but hasn’t yet proven himself consistently at the international level.

Head-to-Head Outlook:

Joey Canoy holds the edge in experience, durability, and fight craft. While Sam Minh Phat boasts impressive KO power, he’s largely untested against world-ranked opposition, with the exception of Chinese #1 Zhu DianXing.

Canoy’s southpaw stance and savvy approach would likely neutralize Phat’s early pressure, wearing him down in later rounds. If the fight goes deep, Canoy becomes the clear favorite. If Phat can land big early, he is a huge chance to pull the win. If not, he’ll struggle to keep up with Canoy’s pace and discipline.

Great and intriguing fight !!

Vincent Astrolabio Returns to the Ring This Thursday in Manila

They say one man's loss is another man's gain, and Filipino boxing fans will have the privilege of witnessing the return of former world title challenger Vincent Astrolabio, as his comeback bout—originally scheduled for Cambodia, has been moved to Manila at very late notice.

The exciting news is that the fight will now take place this Thursday, April 10, as part of the Ultimate Knockout Challenge (UKC) "INFINITY" boxing event.

Astrolabio (19 wins, 5 losses), a standout from Mindanao, will face seasoned Thai opponent Prasitsak Phaprom (41 wins, 4 losses).
The bout marks Astrolabio’s first appearance since his world title defeat in July 2024 against the unbeaten freak Junto Nakatani . Prior to that loss, he had been on an impressive run, with his only other recent setback being a points decision to Australia's Andrew Moloney in a WBO world title bout.

UKC "INFINITY" features a strong lineup of talent, including former world champions and rising contenders.

JOEY CANOY TO FACE SAM MINH PHAT
April 6, 2025

JOEY CANOY TO FACE SAM MINH PHAT

A WBC International minimumweight title bout has been scheduled for April 14 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, featuring Filipino contender Joey Canoy against Vietnam’s Sam Minh Phat.
The match is set as the co-main event of the evening and will be held at a professional boxing event promoted in the Cambodian capital.

Joey Canoy (23-5-2, 14 KOs), a Sanman Gym boxer and stablemate of former world champion Marlon Tapales, enters the bout with strong momentum following a unanimous decision win over Ariston Aton. Canoy is currently ranked No. 3 by the IBF, No. 4 by the WBC, No. 8 by the WBO, and No. 13 by the WBA in the minimumweight division.
A victory in Phnom Penh would further position him for a potential world title opportunity in the near future.

His opponent, Sam Minh Phat (10-5, 8 KOs), represents Vietnam and is seeking his first win over a Filipino fighter.
Minh Phat has previously lost to Filipino boxers ArAr Andales and Esneth Domingo. Despite these setbacks, he remains active and is aiming to secure a breakthrough performance on April 14.
Phat lost in a very credible performance to world title aspirant Zhu DianXing, then resumed in February with a demolition win over a far lesser opponent Ne Lin Aung.

The participation of Sam Minh Phat has been made possible courtesy of the Vietnam Boxing Organization, who are the regulator of all professional boxing in the country.
Vietnam 🇻🇳 boxers are slowly starting to gain popularity outside of the country with foreign promoters, and a big performance by Sam Minh Phat in Phnom Penh will certainly consolidate the brand.

THE PHOENIX THAT IS DONNIE NIETES

Look who's making a comeback !
Four division world champ Donnie Nietes has been one of the most discussed Philippines greats in recent years, largely because the long reigning boxing icon had never "officially" retired.

Well the debate, and the wait, is over !

Koki Inoue v Mikhail Lesnikov Round Three

Koki Inoue v Mikhail Lesnikov Round Three

The world rated #32 Japan #2 Inoue advanced to 18-2 with his stoppage of Vietnam 🇻🇳 trained Mikhail Lesnikov.
It was a very good performance from Mikhail, especially in the first two rounds where he gave Inoue troubles and landed nice counters.
But Koki Inoue was noticeably "thicker" than Mikhail, so the jump in weight class at this level was telling. Inoue looked very big !! He is every ounce a 147lb fighter now !

It's fair to say that Mikhail Lesnikov handled his southpaw opponent extremely well and without issue prior to the stoppage.
He got caught late in the third when Inoue was able to put him off balance landing to the head when Mikhail got careless and dropped his left hand guard.
The strong Japanese fighter was then able to turn and lift him on the ropes, and land a crushing power hand liver shot.
Congratulations to both fighters. Lesnikov dud a lot of good things in this high level bout, and will draw valuable lessons.
Expect to see him bounce back impressively back in his own weight class.
Lots of wins to come !

A Family Feud in the Ring:
Ginjiro Shigeoka Declares War on Filipino Champs

Revenge is a dish best served in the squared circle, and Ginjiro Shigeoka is sharpening his fists for a feast !

Just days after Melvin Jerusalem dismantled his older brother, Yudai Shigeoka, in a dominant display, Ginjiro has vowed to settle the score—not just with Jerusalem, but with every Filipino standing in his way.

And obviously first on his hit list?
International Boxing Federation (IBF) minimumweight champion Pedro Taduran, whom he faces on May 24 in Osaka.

"I can finally fight the way I want to fight," Ginjiro declared, brimming with confidence.
"I’ll hit him without getting hit. I’ve leveled up, and I’m coming for revenge."

The 24-year-old firebrand is still licking his wounds from last July’s ninth-round stoppage loss in Otsu City, a match that he was heavily favoured to win. In fact, many viewed the Japanese star as unbeatable.
But he’s not just out for payback—he’s out for total domination.
If he topples Taduran, Ginjiro has his sights set on the man who just humiliated his brother: WBC champion Melvin Jerusalem.

"If I win this match, I want to unify all four belts. I am going to beat up on Taduran, and then, I’m going to destroy Jerusalem."

The task ahead for Ginjiro Shigeoka is ominous, as it means stepping into a shark tank where Puerto Rico’s Oscar Collazo (WBA and WBO champion) and the Philippines' two reigning titlists Jerusalem and Taduran are also circling - each with the same goal:
Total control of the 105-pound division.

It's a super exciting time in the minimumweight division right now, with all four fighters bringing their unique style to the ring and ready to throw down the gauntlet.

But first things first !
Taduran v Shigeoka on May 24th.
Buckle up boxing fans—this one’s personal !!

PHILIPPINES 🇵🇭 STAR A REAL UNDERDOG

Betting markets have just gone up, and as you'd expect, Mexico's Emanuel Navarrete is quoted as an "unbeatable" favourite against the "King's Warrior" Charly Suarez.

But world boxing fans are not so well informed, and often fickle, and these opening markets offer huge value to those loyal to the chances of the Philippines' best boxer.

Here's how the two fighters line up according to BoxLive :

PREVIEW

When is Navarrete vs Suarez?

Emanuel Navarrete will face the challenge of Charly Suarez on Saturday, May 10th, 2025, at Pechanga Arena, San Diego.

The fight will be contested over 12 rounds in the Super Featherweight division, which means the weight limit will be 130 pounds (9.3 stone or 59 kg).

This contest is for the WBO super featherweight championship of the world.

FIGHTER STATS

Emanuel Navarrete steps into the ring with a record of 39 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw, 32 of those wins coming by way of knockout.

Charly Suarez will make his way to the ring with an unblemished record of 18 wins and 0 draws, with 10 of those by knockout.

The stats suggest Navarrete has a large advantage in power over Suarez, boasting a 82% knockout percentage compared to Suarez's 56%.

Emanuel Navarrete goes into the fight ranked number 1 by The Ring at super featherweight.

Charly Suarez is currently ranked number 15 by the WBC, 1 by the WBO, and 4 by the IBF in the 130lb division.

CURRENT FORM

Navarrete has beaten 3 of his last 5 opponents, stopping 2 of them, going the distance once.

In his last fight, he beat Oscar Valdez on December 7, 2024, by knockout in the 6th round in their WBO World Junior Lightweight championship fight at Footprint Center, Phoenix, United States.

A six-year pro, he won a pair of regional titles in March 2023 when he scored a come-from-behind 12th-round stoppage over Paul Fleming on hostile turf in Sydney, Australia.

The Fleming triumph paved the way for a deal with Top Rank, and Suarez has won three straight fights in America. He knocked out Jorge Castañeda in three rounds last September, which came five months removed from a hard-fought eight-round decision over Louie Coria.

ACTIVITY CHECK

Navarrete's last 5 fights have come over a period of 2 years, 3 months and 7 days, which means he has been fighting approximately every 5 months and 14 days. In those fights, he fought a total of 51 rounds, meaning that they have lasted 10.2 rounds on average.

WHEN YOU DREAM OF WINNING A WORLD TITLE, Every little bit helps !

Charly Suarez and Coach Delfin Boholst were joined by the Philippines' superstar Manny Pacquiao at the Elorde Sports Awards night last week in Manila.

The trio took a quick "time out" to devote some quiet prayer in aid of a better world - which surely must include success for the "King's Warrior" in his upcoming world title bid !!

Suarez will take on legendary Mexican Emanuel Navarrete for the WBO 130lb strap in San Diego on May 10th.
SUAREZ "BUT I KNOW I AM BETTER"

SUAREZ "BUT I KNOW I AM BETTER"

Statistics hardly favour challengers in world title fights, with champions winning by a landslide of more than 70% of those contested.
The task of taking on a highly recognizable star like Emanuel Navarrete in front of a very supportive and perhaps biased "home" crowd in San Diego makes a successful assault on a title even more formidable.

The Philippines' best fighter will start a despised "outsider" in the betting at his World Title debut.
Or put simply - Charly is a real LONGSHOT !
Yet those that have been close to Suarez - watched him, fought him, or even sparred him, quite rightfully ask
"How the hell can Navarrete beat this guy ??"

“San Diego is an incredible fight town, and we are thrilled to return with Emanuel Navarrete, who will go down as one of the great Mexican champions of his era,” said promoter Bob Arum.
“Charly Suarez is a determined, unbeaten contender who will have everyone in the Philippines cheering him on."

“I’m at a new stage of my career, and I’m fired up for another defense of my world title,” Emanuel Navarrete said.
“This fight motivates me.
Suarez is undefeated and dangerous. He’s ranked No. 1 in the world for a reason. He’s exactly the kind of challenge that fuels me.
I owe the fans in San Diego a win, and on May 10, I’ll settle that debt with a dominant victory.”

36-year-old Suarez (18-0, 10 KOs) makes his first attempt to become champion. The unbeaten contender from Asuncion, Davao del Norte stopped Jorge Castaneda in the third round last September and landed the WBO International 130-pound strap.

“I am thankful to Top Rank for this opportunity,” Charly Suarez said. “When I enter the ring on May 10, I will show the world I have what it takes. I won’t waste this opportunity.
Navarrete is a monster in the ring, but I know I am better.”
