Having previously won a youth tournament in Vietnam, Cao was scouted by VSP boxing to debut at the Vina Cup championships at Dong Nai in 2018. He was presented with an impossible task that night. His opponent was Lee Nam Jun of Korea - a tough professional fighter with 10 previous wins. Despite the huge size and experience advantage of the Korean, Cao refused to be dominated and landed lots of great shots that stunned the visitor. He was ultimately beaten on points by the smallest of margins. He impressed everyone that night as being a promising young boxer with a big future.
